Thoughts on a Quiet Labor Day

I haven’t been writing much lately, which is not good. I’m primarily jotting thoughts and ideas but nothing of substance. Unfortunately, nothing on this blog has substance yet. But substance was in my thoughts when I pulled out my credit card to pay for the web hosting.

Needless to say, this post isn’t going to be very deep. It’s a quiet day, a holiday, and I felt like writing something—anything.

My news source at the moment is the Apple News+ App. I’ve even started posting more interesting articles on my Twitter page. They’re interesting to me anyway. This is different from me, but if I’ve found some value in it, maybe someone else can also. I don’t have followers, so it’s sending bits into a black hole at this point, but maybe that will change.

My thought process stems from the power users on Twitter’s FinTwit (Financial Twitter) channels. I stumble upon many interesting ideas and news from those I’ve added to my FinTwit list.

Perhaps it’s just the part of the gauntlet of finding your mind in this batshit crazy world.

So, what have I learned today? Well, it seems there’s a small section of Germany that has embraced the ideas of Nazism, and they’ve won a victory in the eastern state of Thuringia. I am still trying to figure out how to process this. It may be a blip. Or it could be something that grows over time if the world’s discontent increases. And sadly, that is the way we are going. It could also be the news doing what it does, pushing ideas for clicks. I’m no expert; I just found it interesting.

Coming back stateside, it seems almost a trillion dollars in short-term CDs are coming due, and banking consultant James White calls them a “maturity tsunami.” Where will all this money go after it matures? Will it return to CDs, stocks, or under people’s mattresses? That’s a good chunk of cash that will be looking for yield.

In Oregon, an experiment to decriminalize hard drugs will be ending, and for good reason. It didn’t work. You have to give them credit for trying, but it’s not surprising that the fines didn’t work with a cohort of people who don’t pay much attention to schedules as it is. See the inability of users who received citations to make it to their court date. Some things that sound good in theory don’t work in practice. It also might have been a good idea to increase the available healthcare networks and staff to help the people offered the option if they didn’t want to pay the fine and get some help. The drug issue is enormous and not going away any time soon. I wish this had worked and that people had gotten the help they needed. Obviously, to save lives but also to keep our prisons from being clogged with people who didn’t deserve to be there.

Also, Goth is coming back into Vogue, so that’s fun. Grab your black eyeliner, studs, malaise, and cue The Cure.

Enjoy your last hours of the holiday!
